The Fabric of Spacetime, 2011, miscellaneous items and drawings

McHiggins is intrigued by the sublime, the structure of the universe and science’s attempt to comprehend and systematize the incomprehensible. She aims to convey this interest through her visual practice by using understandable mundane and everyday objects to represent the sublime and vast phenomena occurring in space. McHiggins’ installation is a three-dimensional representation of the analogy of spacetime distortion consisting of a children’s duvet cover and a basket ball. The juxtaposition between such common items and the complicated concept brings out the humorous aspect of her work. McHiggins is downright exploiting the immeasurable sublime by highlighting its absurdity and its inevitably unfathomable nature.
