Perpetual Motion Machine, 2011, painted polystyrene foam and string

Stogdale has turned a found object into a moving sculpture. By combining the constant movement with exploration of the dramatic aspects of light and shadow he gives the simple structure of his sculpture a theatrical stage presence and allows it to continuously and unpredictably recreate the space surrounding it. Hence he describes his work as a means to no end. Documentation is also a significant part of Stogdale’s work. After giving his sculpture its stage presence, initiating action and giving up control of it, he has photographed the events thus underlining his sculpture’s potential as an uncontrollable art making machine that can inexhaustibly produce something new.
